Distinguished and Famous people from Greater Geraldton
📚 Randolph Stow
Randolph Stow was born in Geraldton in 1935 and drew on the district in his writing. His novel The Merry-Go-Round in the Sea evokes a Geraldton childhood during the 1940s, giving the coastal town a lasting place in Australian fiction. Stow also wrote poetry and the children’s book Midnite, while To the Islands won the Miles Franklin award. Much of his adult life was spent overseas, but the Geraldton connection remained visible on the page. The city’s library has celebrated the writer and the landscape behind his work.
🏛️ John Willcock
Before becoming Western Australia’s premier, John Willcock worked on the railways at Geraldton. He was a locomotive fireman and then an engine driver, with union involvement accompanying his working life. Elected to represent Geraldton in 1917, he held the parliamentary seat for three decades and served as premier from 1936 to 1945. His career connects the city’s transport workforce with state government during the Depression’s aftermath and the Second World War. Geraldton was both a workplace in his early adulthood and the electorate supporting his long political career.
